Women Symposium

The women symposium was at the golden years center, it was a wonderful experience.  This senior center is so fun and exciting. I was able to measure seniors blood pressure, blood sugar, and hand out toothbrushes & toothpaste. We talked about breast cancer, self-breast examinations, and the importance of getting to know our own anatomy so that you can tell when something is off. We talked about nutrition and exercise in elderly populations, we even asked that everyone participle in a small exercise activity.

I had a blast and was able to do something that I can do and enjoy doing, spending quality time with older people. I’ve always had a passion for the elderly populations, specifically in providing care for individuals with dementia. During our visit one individual with dementia had a low blood sugar, she became very confused and almost fell. They continued to become agitated and attempting to leave even though they did not have a way back home. Because of my history in providing care to patients with dementia I knew how to intervene and was able to help her calm down and eat some food. Once I saw that she needed help I did not hesitate to jump in. Studying abroad contributed to the importance I place on working in a field that I am passionate about.
